Overview

Activities and Intro to Wrestling Session (10 AM - 12 PM)
Games, tumbling/gymnastics skills, and basics of wrestling - $100
**Session + lunch - $130

The primary goal of this camp is to introduce wrestling to new wrestlers and to build the basic fundamental skills of beginning and experienced wrestlers. The session will include games, gymnastics, tumbling, balance, and basics of wrestling with a little bit of live wrestling. Any wrestler, from beginner to serious high school wrestler would benefit from improving fundamentals and learning to control their body.

Advanced Wrestling Session (1:30-3:30 PM)
Warm up, technique sessions, live wrestling, cool down - $100
**Session + lunch - $130

This camp is designed for the serious wrestler. The training session will follow the format of a college wrestling program and include a warm up, hand fighting, situational wrestling, live wrestling, and a cool down. Age is not a limit but be prepared to work hard.

Combo Sessions (10 AM-3:30 PM)
Includes both sessions - $175
**Combo sessions + lunch - $200

**Lunch will be provided on Wheaton’s campus at the award-winning Bon Appetite dining hall.Camp Goals
• Develop character and leadership skills
• Knowledge of proper nutrition
• Learn to wrestle smart and hard
• Build up core strength and improve athletic skills, i.e. Proprioception and kinesthetic awareness
• Learning high-percentage low-risk techniques
• Learning to be a complete wrestler by using the whole body.

Necessary Items
• Good attitude, willingness to work hard and learn
• Wrestling shoes, socks and shorts,
• T-shirt (2 recommended per day)
• Appropriate undergarment
• Water bottle.

Camp Schedule
EACH SESSION WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING
1.) Warm-up,
2.) Core strength development and improvement of athletic skills
3.) Technique
4) Semi-live wrestling
5.) Finish with small segment on nutrition, character, or leadership


About Our Coaches

Jim Gruenwald

Jim Gruenwald enters his 10th year as the head coach for the Thunder wrestling team in 2018-19. He is also the Head Strength Coach for Wheaton Athletics.

Gruenwald's 2017-18 squad featured two All-Americans with Frank Aiello finishing fourth at 157 pounds and Carlos Fuentez placing second at 125 pounds. Fuentez won the 125-pound class at the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational, becoming Wheaton's first PWWI champion since 2003.

Gruenwald, a two-time member of the U.S. Olympic Greco Roman wrestling team, came to Wheaton after serving as an assistant coach for U.S. Greco Roman wrestling team at the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Marquette, Michigan from 2005-09. Gruenwald finished sixth at 60 kg in the Greco Roman competition at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and was 10th at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. A three-time U.S. Champion, Gruenwald completed his competitive career in 2008 as a National Champion. He also won titles in 2003 and 2004.

Gruenwald is a 1994 graduate of Maranatha Baptist Bible College, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Math Education in 1994. He compiled a four-year record of 154-19 on the mat in his career at Maranatha. Gruenwald was a three-time National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Champion, earning MVP honors in 1989 and 1991. A former Wheaton Invitational Champion, Gruenwald is a member of Northwestern University’s Midlands Championships 20-Win Club, with 22 career victories at the prestigious tournament.

Additionally, Gruenwald has a number of certifications as a strength coach. He is a USA Weightlifting Certified Coach; he was trained for 12 years by the Strength & Conditioning staff at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center (1993 – 2005); and he developed the S & C program for wrestling at the United States Olympic Education Center (2005 – 2009).
